Wonderland
The first single from No Band Left, “Wonderland” was written in 2011, at a time when I felt unsure of where I was heading but needed something to hold on to.
The lyrics talk about living beyond my means, but really they were about chasing a dream and putting everything I had into music. It cost me friendships and stability, but I carried on because I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.
After more than a decade writing classical crossover music, I’ve come back to the songs from my past. They remind me of why I started and what I was trying to find. “Wonderland” feels like the right place to begin again.
The song is built on electronic and cinematic pop, beginning quietly and slowly building to a bigger, more emotional sound. It’s about escape and fantasy, about stepping out of the ordinary and into a place that feels brighter, stranger, and more free.
No Band Left is where I bring together what I’ve learnt in composition with the songs I’ve written and the ones still waiting to be written. “Wonderland” may be a song from the past, but it feels just as true now as when I first wrote it.
Wonderland Lyrics
I’ve always lived beyond my means.
Always tried to get what I want.
As I never cared for this place much,
I’ve found where maybe I belong.
(Wonderland)
Take me to wonderland
(Wonderland)
I’ll have tea amongst the roses,
Once I’ve played the perfect song
On a piano deep in the illusion
And in the wonder of confusion.
I will be raised to new circles
The height of social standing.
I grow with my empire, of multiple fantasies
In Wonderland
(Wonderland)
Take me to wonderland
(Wonderland)
I’ve only believed in one fairytale,
In the hope that it comes true.
To find myself free from cold reality
With nothing but dreams to run to.
I’ve always lived beyond my means.
Always tried to get what I want.
But as I never cared for this place much,
I’ve found where I think I belong.
In Wonderland
(Wonderland)
Take me to wonderland
(Wonderland)
I’ve always lived beyond my means.
Always tried to get what I want.
And as I never cared for this place much,
I’ve found where maybe I belong.
Return me to wonderland
